The Tech of the USS Ronald Reagan

By Deane Barker on August 21, 2003

The Best Defense Is a Good Upgrade: Neat story on the USS Ronald Reagan, its technology, and how it was built to be expanded on over the next 10 years.

“A Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, the Reagan is the first built since the ’90s tech boom. Engineers strung 200 miles of fiber-optic cable through a ship-wide maze of plastic tubes, expecting ever greater demands on network capacity. Later this year, the ship will trade up to gigabit Ethernet….

The Navy will soon test personal locating devices that could eventually roll out on the Reagan. Sailors will wear radio frequency tags on their uniforms, letting the captain scan a digital map of the ship and locate the entire crew by name.”
