Goodbye Markdown

By Deane Barker on May 22, 2009

I think it’s time to say goodbye to Markdown, the syntax shorthand that I’ve been using on Gadgetopia for almost five years now.

I’ve really enjoyed Markdown, but the simple fact is that WYSIWYG editors suck much less now.  I used Markdown as a Movable Type plugin for years because MT didn’t have WYSIWYG. But I’ve been using WordPress over at and came to enjoy WYSIWYG in the browser again.

The final nail in the Markdown coffin came when I installed Windows Live Writer and started posting with that.  It’s so simple to use that I even changed the default text filter on my MT install back to “None” so that it wouldn’t interfere with the HTML that Writer generates.

So long, Markdown. I remain a big fan, but I’m officially leaving you for WYSIWYG, geek cred be damned.
