Microsoft’s Usenet Management Tool

By Deane Barker on July 30, 2003

MSR Netscan – Usenet Social Accounting Search Engine: Microsoft is testing a new tool to collate Usenet postings. It’s pretty simply in theory — you bulk load Usenet postings into a database, then mine the results to make everything easier to wade through. This demo examines postings from Microsoft’s own public Windows XP groups.

Network World Fusion has an article about it which explains more:

“‘We need tools that will help us better discover and use online communities. The interface to a social space was designed by some of the most antisocial people in the world,’ Smith said. ‘You want to see more metadata about these communities, (such as) how many people are in there and come back.’”
