    Anyway, the function of the anti-reflective coating is to filter and reject a tiny amount of light that bounces off the (layers and layers of) lens inside the camera (or binoculars, or your windshield – any tranparent glass material). Only the exterior layer is coated, so it has to account for the total internal refection of the system. hehe. for details, my name below links to the Wikipedia Article.
