Revo Power – Motorized Replacement Bike Wheel: Like riding your bike, but don’t like all that pedaling? This baby gets 200 miles to the gallon.

The Wheel is brand new patented technology, incorporating the engine and gear train entirely within the front wheel. It can be installed on most existing bicycles around the world. You simply replace your existing wheel!

You can’t buy them until next year. Via Metafilter.

  1. I’d agree with Josh; a two-stroke engine is a bad choice for this application, although they do say it meets EPA and CARB regulations. I could swear I’ve seen something similar to this that uses an electric motor… Anybody?

The Stokemonkey is cool, but $1,350 for the kit? Yikes!

  2. One of its selling points is for ‘unlicensed drivers’ to have a more efficient way of getting around, it says.

I don’t know what exactly it’s classified as, but where I live it’d probably be a moped, and you need a moped license to be able to drive one on the road here. Plus then it gets insured too (liability is mandatory on anything with a motor).

Still a neat item though. I’d like to try one if nothing else. I wonder if it accelerates fast or just maintains speed.

On a geek note: I wonder what effect the motor assembly has on the gyroscopic precession of the front wheel. In other words, is it harder to steer at high speeds?

  3. True but it doesnt look like a moped, it just looks like a bike, cop would feel kind of stupid pulling you over for that. Its way cheaper than the electric version and easier to install, When I slap it on a racing bike that already goes 50 mph its a win win.
