Rugged Tablet PCs

Xplore Technologies Corp. – The iX104: If you think Tablet PCs are for wussies, then take a look at this one. Check out the environmental specs — it will survive a 4-foot drop onto concrete or immersion in water for up to 30 minutes. I dare someone to set up backyard wi-fi access point, put on a scuba mask, and blog something from the bottom of their pool.

  1. Did you check out the Customers & Markets link? Military, police, utilities, etc… Not the kind of item you’d be bringing home for personal use. I remember hearing a story a while back about one of the early Apple iBooks (the ugly fruit-flavored, rubberized clamshell units) surviving a trip down three flights of concrete stairs. A college student was running up the stairs carrying the iBook, it slipped out of his hands, between the railings, down twenty feet to the landing below, then down the next flight of stairs. He went back down expecting it to be in pieces & dreaming of a new PowerBook, but found only a minor scratch on his fully-functional computer. I don’t think I’d take one underwater though.
