The Net and the Movies

By Deane Barker on May 3, 2006

The Web On Film: Here’s a great collection of movie clips showing depictions of the Internet on film from 1983 to 2005. Some notes:

  • Wargames
Great movie, and probably the most realistic clip of them all, except for the bit when the computer talks.

  • Sneakers
Another good one from a really under-rated movie.

  • The Net
Very early in the Net’s adoption. This was the movie that sounded “the alarm” that the Internet could be a Very Bad Thing.

  • Swordfish
A really laughable clip that shows Hugh Jackman turning the art of programming into a music video. The visualizations here are stupid, but how else were they supposed to make programming look interesting?

The title of the article is wrong — “The Web on Film.” Several of the clips have nothing to do with the Web. Wargames predated the Web by 10 full years.

  1. Some more:

    • The Lawnmower Man, 1992, based on a Stephen King novel
    • Hackers, 1995, starring a very young Angelina Jolie shortly flashing her breasts in a dream sequence
    • FeardotCom, 2002, redefining the term “killer website”
