Automatically Decrapping a Dell

By Deane Barker on April 12, 2006

Introducing the Dell De-Crapifier…: If you’ve been hanging out on his blog for a while, you’d have heard me talk often about “decrapping a Dell” (like, in this post, for instance).

This guy went a step further and wrote a script to do it. And he stole my name — I should have trademarked “decrap.”

The script was created for a Dell Inspiron 1300, but it should work just fine on many other Dell computers. I’ve also written the script in a modular way so that it can be easily expanded to uninstall additional programs. I’m really hoping that through additional contributions, that this script would be enhanced to cover just about any standard Dell installation.

I just decrapped another Dell the other day. I wish I had known about this.

  1. Hey Deane,

It seems the Internet world is smaller than you think. We’ve still been using my highly “customized” version of InfoCentral for quite some time and it’s been working very well for us. I was one of the guys who attempted to start GroupOrg, which never really got off the ground.

As far as the De-Crapifier name goes, I did actually come up with it independently… I guess great minds think alike ;)
