Bad Hard Drive Noises

By Deane Barker on January 23, 2006

Songs to make backups to: This post at Metafilter provides some deep links into the Hitachi knowledge base to WAV files of dying hard drives.

Yes, Hitachi has provided audio of bad noises, to which you can compare your own drive to see if you’re screwed. This one sounds really bad. Back up quick if you ever hear that.

Kudos to Hitachi for doing this. It’s a neat idea.

  1. This is pretty neat.

Some of the noises made me cringe, but thanks to Hitachi for providing a means of checking our hard drives without needing a twenty minute phone conversation to say things like, “Um it’s making a clicking noise. Ooh now it sounds like a phaser. No, a PHASER.”

    Kudos.
