It’s Official: IE Sucks

Schneier on Security: Internet Explorer Sucks: Security God Bruce Schneier tells it like it is.

MSIE was 98% unsafe. There were only 7 days in 2004 without an unpatched publicly disclosed security hole.

Firefox was 15% unsafe. There were 56 days with an unpatched publicly disclosed security hole. 30 of those days were a Mac hole that only affected Mac users. Windows Firefox was 7% unsafe.

Opera was 17% unsafe: 65 days. That number is accidentally a little better than it should be, as two of the upatched periods happened to overlap.

  1. Without attempting to sound like an IE advocate, I do think some CSS based websites don’t render correctly (read: render differently) on non-IE browsers–but that’s only because the majority of sites are optimized for the bigger market. In my opinion though, some unknowing users may click on ads that resemble the Windows XP look, warning them that their computer is insecure, which may inturn plant malicious code that is later removed by a program they tell you to pay for (I just read that on a local paper today)…

The fact that IE sucks is platform independent, as most Macs are immune to these problems..
