“Bob, how does the network sound today?”

By Deane Barker on July 14, 2003

SourceForge.net: Project Info – Peep: The Network Auralizer: My office’s server is just under my desk, so I listen to it all day long. I’ve gotten to the point where I can often hear if something’s wrong. I know the hard drive starts cycling at five minutes past the hour because I run a job then. If it doesn’t stop in a minute or two, I know my process is running wild. This is neat, but you can take it a step further:

“Peep is a network monitoring tool that represents network information via an audio interface. Network diagnostics are made not only based on single network events but whether the network sounds ‘normal’.”

Imagine piping that into your office. It’d be the ultimate in Zen-like connectedness.
