The Retriever

By Deane Barker on August 25, 2005

Retriever from Coming Through: A tow-truck tow-cycle.

The superior manoeuvrability of the Retriever is due to a towing device folded on to the back of the motorcycle – making the vehicle only 95 cm wide.

The towing device is not unfolded until you reach the disabled vehicle. This innovative design allows the Retriever to reach cars swiftly and tow them safely.

  1. I’d hate to see what pulling a car very far through city traffic would do to a motorcycle’s clutch. Something tells me they’re not designed for that.

  2. Genius! I doubt it tows large cars or suv’s if so it may only be far enough to get it out of the way. It is a great idea though. Getting full sized tow trucks past miles of backed up traffic is sometimes a problem.

  3. Something tells me they’re not designed for that.

Probably not, but it’s a really big bike.

The Honda GL 1800 GoldWinghas a 1.8-liter Flat-6, which is decent-sized for a car these days. My Accord only has 2.0-liters. The bike has 118 h.p.; my Accord, 130 h.p.

I’ve heard about your car Deane – I am not so sure about that.

That’s the truth. It had 130 h.p. when it was new. Not so much anyone, I don’t think.

  6. Engine & horsepower are one thing, but you still have to get the bike and whatever is hooked up behind it moving. The clutch is designed to get the bike, riders and a normal amount of payload away from a dead stop.

The Gold Wing weighs just under 800lbs. Throw a rider & passenger on top, stuff the storage compartments with a full complement of gear, fill the gas tank, and the gross weight would be around 1500lbs. Then you add a hitch and a car behind? I can smell the clutch burning already!

Something tells me that using a Retriever would probably void Honda’s engine/drivetrain warranty!
