IEEE 802.3af

Switch on for powered data networks. PowerDsine recently announced the approval of the IEEE 802.3af Power over Ethernet standard, which will allow the existing Ethernet standard to be extended to carry both data and power over the same line. This could mean devices that don’t normally need a network connection such as an electric razor, may now be powered via an RJ45.

“The days of travelling with lots of different adapters to ensure you can recharge your laptop, phone and other gadgets could soon be at an end.”
