Google Calendars

By Deane Barker on February 24, 2005

Rumors are swirling about Google Calendar. The theory is that Google is developing an algorithm to index events along with their dates. Thus, you could search for “oakland raiders” and get a list of game dates for the Raiders (which would normally be dates for mourning, but we got Moss yesterday…).

Jason Kottke wants to search for “nyc concert” and “nyc readings OR signings.” After the show I went to the other night, I’d like to search for “second city minneapolis” or “second city omaha.”

When you think about, Google is become a master at data extraction. If you have the data in the correct format, returning it isn’t hard, but where Google is delivering value is in extracting indexable data from unstructured sources. That’s the foundation that all their search tools are utiltiizing to do the amazing things they’re doing. That side of the search equation is infinitely more difficult.
