Porn and the DVD Standards War

Porn industry mulls next-generation DVD: We’ve talked a bit before about the upcoming format war between next-generation DVD formats: Blu-ray and HD DVD. Blu-ray has the edge since it’s backed by Sony and Phillips, but you’d be surprised who is probably going to end up deciding who wins:

Pornography customers have been some of the first to buy home video machines, DVD players and subscribe to high-speed Internet.

One of the next big issues in which pornographers could play a deciding role is the future of high-definition DVDs.

[…] Adult film producers want the higher quality picture as well as extra space for creative expression — like giving viewers choice of camera angles.

The simple fact is that the size of the porn business is staggering. I looked around for some stats, and I found them ranging from $10 billion a year in the U.S. in 1999, to $20 billion a year worldwide. And that’s just the adult video market.

By comparison, the combined revenue of the Big Three TV networks last year was $6.2 billion.

With a market impact like that, the adult video producers are going to decide this format dispute, whether anyone likes it or not.
