I considered myself to be a pretty avant-garde web designer using Stopdesign’s image replacement technique to replace certain text elements on the page with snazzy images, while still allowing the text to be read by search engines and screen readers.
Well, it turns out I’m behind the times. Apparently, the technique makes the text unreadable with some screen readers. Over the last year, there have been numerous attempts to improve on the Stopdesign method, each with their own sets of pros and cons.
Mezzoblue has a nice article that rounds of these methods, provides examples, and lists the issues with each one.
