Meanwhile, back on Mars

By on September 7, 2004

I must admit I was shocked to find out today the the Mars rovers are still quietly going about their business on the red planet. They’re still plugging along climbing through craters and scratching rocks. The Spirit rover has travelled over two miles since it landed. The folks at JPL are starting to sound like proud parents in their weekly status reports.

Sol 225 was truly a mega-activity sol. Spirit awoke at 11:20 a.m., Gusev local solar time and stayed awake well past the afternoon communication session with NASA’s Mars Odyssey orbiter without taking a nap. Spirit hasn’t done that in a long time.

I have a strange feeling that if the Martian winter causes the rovers to hibernate that they’ll wake up ready to go again next spring. Nice work NASA. Truly something to be proud of.
