German net worm writer may have been helping mom: Awwww, how sweet. How can you prosecute a kid who tried to give his Mom a Mother’s Day present?
A German high-school student who confessed to writing a crippling computer worm that caused chaos around the world may have been trying to help his mother’s small “PC Help” anti-virus business, state prosecutors said on Monday.
Sven Jaschan, an 18-year-old who has just graduated from vocational school, was detained on Friday and admitted to being the mastermind behind the fast-spreading Sasser worm. Investigators in nearby Hanover said they were put on his trail by a tip earlier Friday from Microsoft. A tip-off from reward-seekers may have also contributed to the arrest.
