When Windows Update Attacks

By Deane Barker on May 2, 2004

Has Windows Update gone nuts for anyone else? Every day for the last 10 days, I’ve been told by my Windows XP Home system that I have a new update to install. I have dutifully installed them all. None have required a reboot. My Windows XP Pro machine at work has had no such obsession with updating.

True, I just formatted my home machine. But that was three weeks ago, and I ran Windows Update multiple times after I rebuilt the machine until it told me there was nothing left to update.

Come to think of it, I just formatted my work machine too. Still no compulsion to update. Strange.

  1. What updates is it trying to install? My work servers are constantly asking to install the windows media update or patch. I’ve installed it via WU and the downloaded patch. i’ve had to just deal with it and keep telling it to remind me in 3 days….

  2. Before you click “install” click on “details” to reveal what is being installed.

If you use a 3rd party Java Virtual Machine you will ifnd that WU regularly tries to updatae the MS JVM and fails beciase it isn’t installed. But it isn’t smart enought o say “Oh, I won’t download that again” and tries to update it again and again until I eventually gave up and installed the MS JVM :P

  3. I had this problem with Windows Media Player a while back, it would nag me over and over again about upgrading to WMP9. I finally gave in and just updated the dang thing to get it to stop.
