Bribing for a Link

By Deane Barker on March 30, 2004

I bought a universal media reader today, and got this in an email from the company shortly after.

We have a special money saving offer for you today. If you would like to receive a $5 credit back on your credit card for this order, simply post a link to [company URL] on your website (with a short description of our products). When finished, email us the web address where the link is posted and we will give you a $5 credit back on to your original credit card.

Good idea? Who knows. Can’t hurt, I suppose, since they probably build the extra $5 into the purchase price.

  1. One advantage well worth the $5 is that these links raise the Google PageRank, raising the target site in searches.
