iTunes Cards at Target

By on February 18, 2004

A Reuters story reports that Target will be selling prepaid $15 iTunes Music Service (iTMS) cards off the rack alongside iPod mini’s.

I predict that this will have a huge effect on the downloadable music industry; if consumers can use cash (or check) at Target or other retailers to prepay their music downloads — no need for a credit card — the market is opened to two huge untapped segments; kids (they’ll be using these things like crazy) and those who can’t get a credit card.

Also of note in the Reuters article is that Apple has reported selling 100,000 iPod Mini’s in the two weeks since they were introduced. This in spite of critics claiming that they were priced too high. Watch in the coming weeks and months as the economies of scale kick in and the prices start to drop. Cool!
