Firebird Database Does BLOBs Better than the File System
Firebird is faster than filesystem for blob storage!: This is encouraging. Storing files as BLOBs would simplify many scenarios, especially in the content management world. What I believe is pretty interesting is how writing to a Firebird database (which stores small files saving disk space since it only uses one single file!) is actually faster [...]
Firebird Database Server Penetration
‘Most important ever’ MySQL reaches beta: I found this stat in this article about MySQL 5.0, and I’m amazed by it: [MySQL] accounted for 40 percent of open source database deployments, while Firebird and PostgreSQL accounted for 39 percent and 11 percent of deployments respectively. Firebird has a 39% share of open-source database deployments? One [...]
Postgres 8 on Windows
PostgreSQL 8 Released: I noticed this the other day. There’s a Windows installer for Postgres with this new release. [Version 8] is the first PostgreSQL release to natively run on Microsoft Windows as a server. So add Postgres to (at least) MySQL and Firebird as enterprise-level open source database servers for Windows.
Linux Database Benchmarks
SQLite Database Speed Comparison: If you ever wanted to know which Linux database option was the fastest, the guys over at SQLite have done some tests. No surprises: SQLite wins, MySQL is second, with PostgreSQL trailing the pack. Note to Access users: MySQL can do 25,000 inserts in two seconds. SQLite can do it in [...]
Sunbird
The Sunbird Project – Standalone Calendar: Since they can’t use “Firebird,” Sunbird was the next best thing, I suppose. The Sunbird Project is a redesign of the Mozilla Calendar component. Our goal is to produce a cross platform standalone calendar application based on Mozilla’s XUL user interface language. At the moment the “Sunbird” name is [...]
Web Developer Extension Re-Visited
Web Developer Extension: I don’t remember where I heard about this one, but it’s a peach of an extension. We’ve talked about the Web Developer extension for Mozilla and FireFox before, but the latest version comes with the sweetest sidebar you could ever imagine… You can open the stylesheet for the current page in a [...]
Firebird
As will surprise nobody who knows me, the shininess of the Firebird database server had been blinding me since I posted that interview yesterday. It was calling my name, so I just had to download and install it. I’m extremely happy with what I found — it’s a free database server with a ton of [...]
Firebird Database Server
Beyond Proprietary Databases: Helen Borrie on the Future of Firebird: Here’s an interesting interview with one of the people behind Firebird, an emerging open-source, multi-platform database server. It’s a fork of a mature commercial database called InterBase. InterBase is an enterprise-level database — Firebird is the same, but better. You’ll find Firebird behind a number [...]

mozdev.org – www: projects/active: This list of projects give me great faith that Firebird/fox is very much on the right track.

The Mozilla Foundation has released the 0.8 release of my favorite browser. However, perhaps in order to escape withering criticism from owen ;-), they have yet again changed the name of the browser to Firefox. The new release marks a significant milestone on the development roadmap towards the highly anticipated 1.0 release of the Mozilla [...]
