Melinda Gates goes public: Interesting profile of Melinda Gates, wife of Bill. It discusses her philanthropic work and the state of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which is crazy-rich, it turns out.
[it] has assets of $37.6 billion, making it the world’s largest. […] Melinda and Bill will very likely give away more than $100 billion in their lifetimes. Already the foundation has disbursed $14.4 billion - more than the Rockefeller Foundation has distributed since its creation in 1913 (even adjusted for inflation).
Love or hate Bill, you can’t discount his proclivity for charity. But can we forgive Melinda for Microsoft Bob yet?
I'm not only willing to forgive people who try and fail to create new, nontechnical interface to desktop computing operations; I am willing to celebrate them. It was a cheap experiment in pursuit of a desirable end - exactly the thing that good organisations should do. People who ridicule it simply lessen the chances that large copmpanies will pursue risky experiments, by raising the reputational cost of such experiments.
Add in the giving-away-$100-billion thing and I think Melinda Gates has reason to be happy with her achievements.
In Summary –
Those of us associated with Tiffany Hollaway Academy of the Arts are extremely thankful for the calling that we’ve received, to impact the lives of the future leaders in our society. We recognize that contributions may fluctuate, and our desire to make a positive difference in every young life that we come in contact with may not be realized, but we remain steadfast in our commitment to this project because it truly is a calling.
The expertise that we’ve developed, and the experiences that have shaped our lives, were all accomplished to prepare us for this very moment. We don’t view this mission as insurmountable; we view this mission as the execution of our passion. There’s no greater reward than to encourage young people to be the best that they can be. Inspiring them to grow into self-confident, academically strong, respectful, community-caring individuals will not only benefit them personally, but it will also benefit the communities that we call home.
We have little choice in the development and support of organizations like Tiffany Hollaway Academy of the Arts. If we divest our time and resources from the development of young people, we invest in the delinquency and mal-adjusted behavior that is sure to follow. Young people depend on the guidance, structure, and learning opportunities that we can provide. We want our young people to know that dismal economic conditions, isolation, academic failure are all overrated as it pertains to personal achievement and desire. Tiffany Hollaway Academy of the Arts is an organization that has great youth appeal coupled with educational platforms that create learning experiences and creative success!
It would be astonishing if our financial resources exceeded our passion and commitment to this project, but currently that’s not the case. Although we’ve postponed additional elements of our program, to be effective we must have financial supporters and program advocates who can help us help others.
We may not all be rocket scientists, professional athletes, or the President of the United States, but we are all capable of doing one thing, we are all capable of making a difference in the lives of children; and as you review this information packet, our greatest hope is that you ask yourself, how can I assist in this worthwhile endeavor? The appreciation of your actions will last a lifetime!
