Why Windows Sucks

Is Windows inherently more vulnerable to malware attacks than OS X?: This is an extremely well-written and well-reasoned article explaining exactly why Windows is more vulnerable than OS X to malware. The author is obviously very familiar with the internals of both systems, and he explains very clearly where and how Microsoft screwed up in relation to OS X.

Based on this reading, Windows problems extend down to its very core and base architecture. Bummer.

Uh oh. Did Deane drink the Koolaid? He's getting closer still to owning an Apple machine; it's only a matter of time now.

Let's hope this post doesn't draw commentors like another similarly titled post did.

I don't discriminate -- I think everything sucks.

windows isnt more vulnerable , its just that there arent to many people to make viruses in mac programs, because mac sucks

"windows isnt more vulnerable , its just that there arent to many people to make viruses in mac programs, because mac sucks"

You would think a bone headed Windoz user would make a virus for Mac? I use three operating systems. Linux, just monkey around on and everyday use, Mac for creative and family use and Windoz for my kids $10.00 games you can buy at Walmart. I dont even have Windoz hooked up on my server. The only time i've had a problem with my Mac was an easy fix with my DS.Store file, thats it.

cheeko: what your basically saying is you don't use computers? linux- monkey around mac- family use (other people) windows- cheap $10 software shit

Define the word 'use'? If I use Skype, NVU, Open Office or GIMP on my Linux box, iTunes, iWeb, Flash on my Mac and my kid plays Roller Coaster Tycoon on XP, then what the hell do you call it?

by GottaLife,   November 2, 2006 12:55 PM

I 'use' my Windoze machine.

Yep, it's holding the kitchen door open ...

No 784MB updates, no crashes, no B.S.O.D's, no waiting for the pointless & lengthy 'Boot/Shutdown' sequence ... no worries ...

by flakker,   November 2, 2006 10:16 PM

why do mchippies always indirectly attack the pc system by attacking the weakest link, the OS? ok the os is shitty thats why higher end programs CATIA, NX etc use a unix system and both of them cant be used on macs.

pc flamers will at least attack the shit system that is under the mac, the os is shit as well but by far over-engineered for such shit system that is a mac.

windows is the best by far...has more operating system choices by far. can be put on just about any machine and microsoft office blows the competiton away

screw mac....special this and special that....i hardly see any software made for mac...and mac users are some kind of tree hugging elite with queer tendencies if you ask me....hippie wanna be yuppie types that think that mac is the end all save all of humanity

steve jobs needs to get another job and quit ripping the people off with computers that crash and burn on first use in many cases...

let sue mac right out of existence because jobs has been con jobing us windows users in the courts for years like sueing microsoft over the trash can icon conept

mac frankly is a gay queer tree huggers life time wet dream joke!

I can be like "real" too, I mean, all I need to do is string together a couple of words in sequence and pray it makes sense. The ironic thing about his last sentence, where he collectively names everyone a "tree hugger" is that environmentalists extremely disapprove the use of technology as it contributes to the destruction of the environment (the greenhouse gases released to transport computers, generate electricity and power the internet so you can post stupid comments in other people's articles). If you look at major software companies, such as Ableton, Adobe, hell, even Microsoft, they ALL make software for the Mac. I can see it now: Dr real, PhD Failurology.

"moses" is another example of intelligent life on Earth. Way to go representing Windows by being illiterate . Thanks for NOT using ANY punctuation, paragraphs and initial letters. Thanks for telling us that you're "ashamed" of us because we "dont like computers". We change our OS to suit our needs. Would you consider using Windows 1 today? Of course not, because then you won't be able to post any more illiterate messages such as the one above over the internet.

I somewhat agree with the comments provided by 'flakker' back in November, however, I disagree with the comments in reference to 'learn to use ur computer", I would have more time to learn to use my computer if I wasn't constantly updating virus definitions, keeping tabs on pop-ups, malware and fixing the bugs in the various versions, updates, and patches for XP. Imagine what we could learn if we weren't constantly fixing the bugs that should have been fixed prior to shipping out an inferior product. And the only reason why we deal with it is that we have little to no choices in the business world which has been dominated by Microsoft.

To those of you who believe Windows is the best there is, I once believed that, too. But in the last four years, I've gotten smart. Granted, Windows is real bad to crash unexpectedly, catch viruses, and what not, which I accepted as part of the deal.

However, starting with Windows XP, Microsoft began implementing an activation system that, every time you request something from Microsoft Update, checks your computer info against its database of registered users to be sure you paid for your copy of XP (or Vista).

Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating software piracy here. However the beef I have with such a setup is that if you upgrade your computer's hardware, Microsoft is going to think you've used your copy of Windows on more than one computer, and you have to call Microsoft to get this whole mess straightened out. As far as I'm concerned, it's none of Microsoft's business what I do with my computer's hardware.

When I first learned about this from a book on Windows XP at Barnes & Noble, I read all the implications and felt that that was wrong, and I vowed to one day ditch Windows and switch to Linux. I took it slowly to get myself used to Linux, but two years ago, I finally went to purely Linux on my computer, and I have discovered that I no longer need Windows for anything at all on my computer.

If you haven't tried Linux, I would encourage you to do so. For starters, there are versions of Linux that run directly from a CD and bypass your Windows installation entirely to let you see what Linux is like. Give it a try, you won't be sorry -- and in fact, I think you'll like what you see.

I've used PCs and Windows for-ev-er. And recently, when I graduated from high school, I was getting into video editing and digital graphics and animation, etc. So I decided to go out and get a mac since that's what they're for. I figured, hey, I don't really play a lot of games on my computer. (if you're a serious gamer type it would be dumb to get a mac, unless you wait for their parallels to get better and better and eventually be able to run any windows game out there-- people claim it can't yet but every game I've loaded works)

Anyway, my laptop came in the mail (mac) and I booted it up and put in my user name and password and all that normal stuff that I did on my PC. And then when it came to the desktop I was expecting things to pop up saying "Install this!!! Install that!! Update this!! Keep your system updated here!! Register for BLAH BLAH BLAH!!" Absolutely nothing. Nothing like that at all. I turned the computer on and it was just...on. I opened up applicatins and checked out my programs. Came with iPhoto, which makes it incredibly easy to put photos into the computer and automatically categorize them and with one simple click watch them all in a slide show with any song or number of songs. And it works perfectly with iTunes. One click.

I remember having to spend hours importing one picture at a time into what was it called? Power Point? (Which I had to pay for, didn't even come with my computer, despite the other pointless programs that had been installed on it) And you can forget about inserting music into the presentation. You have to pick a specific slide and then figure out where the music ends to put the next song into the right slide..no man. No way. Took way too long for something that should be simple.

Then there was iMovie, and iDVD, which work perfectly together. It's like they're married. Without fights. Everything is click n' drag. That easy. If you're not all pro about editing movies (if you are, spend the money for Final Cut Pro like I did) iMovie is fucking amazing for coming with the computer free. It's all just click and drag. The computer even comes with other fun things as simple as comic book makers, click and drag a pic into each block and it automatically resizes smooths, etc. Everything works flawlessly. Great for if you make little cartoons or sketches, anime, etc. and want the little word/thought bubbles outlines done for you right away.

I can't say much about the old macs, since I never owned one. But anyone complaining about the new ones has to be nuts. Or ignorant. Remember trying to set up your internet connection on your PC? I was expecting a big deal with that on my mac, too. But I turned it on. And then I turned on the airport for the first time and it asked if I wanted to join -insert wireless network name here- and I said yes and that was it. It was that easy. I remember throwing a fit over the same easy process on my PC.

I never have problems with viruses or weird glitches. And to clear up some common whiny complaints about mac: Lackin a right click? If you're that desperate for a right-click why did you bother using the mac mouse? Why didn't you use a PC mouse? That's what I plugged into my mac back in school and OMG. Like, I had a right mouse button alla sudden!!! GASP. And on the laptops, instead of having a "right mouse button" you just use two fingers instead of one. Wanna right click? Tap with two fingers. Even my dad, who is the biggest PC buff there is, was impressed by something as simple as that.

Voice recognition. You have to pay for those things if you want them on a PC. Your arms don't work? Body paralyzed? Who cares? You mac will still know what you want it to do. AND IT COMES WITH THAT TECHNOLOGY. Imagine that. Free with the computer!

And if you're still attached to Windows, Linux, etc...Parallels is coming out with better versions every time you turn around. Why would you need anything else when your computer can run any Operating System out there?

What's another thing people don't like about macs? Suddenly closing prgrams due to an unexpected error? Because that's so unlike the PC suddenly freezing up in the middle of something you're doing. Cursor won't move or anything. You're like wtf. Then do the control alt delete thing. I guess macs just do the control alt delete for you. That's considerate. A little more surprising though.

Anyway. All I have to say is...if all you want a computer for is to play games, get a PC. that's what my brother did. Spent 3000 dollars on an Alienware laptop and all he does is play game on it and send email. Then our dog tripped over its power cord and damaged the display cause it fell on the floor. Had to pay to get that fixed. Too bad it doesn't attach magnetically.

And if you still want to complain about the mac not having a lot of games, don't complain about the mac. Mac doesn't make games. Complain about the people making the games who don't make it for mac. It's their lazy asses who don't want to make the effort to make two different versions for two different systems. And since the majority of game-loving Mac-bashing people own PCs, that's what games are made for. It's about money. So hey, get a mac, get a pc, mine and my dad's get along. We play games wirelessly together. And it be gooood. But seriously. I finally had to say something about all the people like "whine whine mac sucks" when that's not the case. It's that you don't know shit. Peace!

Macs used to really suck back in the 90's when I was a computer consultant that had to deal with Windows, Suns, and Mac networks/software. At the time, I was a hard-core Windows and Linux lover. Then came OS X. Folks at work pressured me into that OS, and I hated it for the first few months. But then I started to see the features that it offered, features that were inherently smarter than Windows, although the Mac hardware was horribly slower than the much faster PC's. Of course, some features that Windows had were better than OS X, but the majority of them were in OS X.

Then came the intel chip! Wow! The Macs are now SO much faster!

Anyway, my Windows computer at home has gotten really slow over the last few years as I apply patch after patch, browes the internet, and let my wife use it for her e-mail client (Outlook coupled with Windows is horrible and only an idiot would tell you otherwise!). I am trying to convince her to get a mac to replace it. But macs will not be entering the industrial workplace anytime soon, so she needs to keep her work skills sharp by using Windows at home. Bummer for the family IT guy who has to respond to "why does this message keep popping up about some other program trying to access my adress book" or "why doesn't this work--it used to work fine" or "why is the computer so horribly slow...it used to be so much faster, when will the hour glass stop spinning..." !!@#@$%#%$

flakker: ok.. for all you who says windows suck? what was the first OS u started out using when u were a lil boy..

When I was a "lil boy", I started out on IBM PC DOS... I don't understand why you believe everyone started out with Windows... particularly because when a lot of people were "lil boys", Windows probably did not exist or were in its early stages...
