I need a favor from anyone who is so inclined —
Based on our last discussion about screen resolutions, I want to start fiddling with the amount of width Gadgetopia takes on the screen. But to do this, I really need to see what you’re seeing when you look at the site. (Well, I don’t have to, but it’d be handy to see just how much space you guys really have to work with.)
So, I’m going to go after this in the most rock-simple way I can think of: I want you to send me a screencap. Yes, seriously.
Bring up the Gadgetopia home page (this page) in your browser, however you normally view it — screen maximzed, whatever toolbars, etc. you normally have. I want you in your “natural environment,” so to speak.
Screencap the browser window. You can screencap the entire desktop if you want, but I really just need the browser window.
Review the screencap to make sure there’s no sensitive information displayed. (I don’t want to see your bookmark to the official CareBears site…I have my own, thanks.)
Don’t edit the screencap at all — no resizing, for sure.
Upload the screencap here. We’re all done with this experiment. I got 65 screencaps which is awesome. Thanks everyone.
I’ll leave it open for a week. I’m grateful for anything you’re willing to provide. When everything is in, I’ll do some measurements and provide more exact stats on my continuing quest for the true relationship between screen resolution and viewable browser area.
About four months ago, I asked you all to send me a screencap of the Gadgetopia home page sitting in your browser window. I promised to do some analysis of the results, and I kept meaning to get to it, but never got to it. Tonight, I finally sat down…
A long time ago, I did a user survey. It was relatively stupid, if truth be told, but it was kind of interesting to see how many people responded. The grand total was 56 or something, so not a big turnout. Anyway, its two years later and the guys…
I'm using a new stat tracking app called Mint. It has a plug-in called "User Agent 007" (ho, ho -- what wit) that captures browser stats. Interesting stats: almost 90% of Gadgetopia visitors are at 1024 x 768 or greater almost 20% of visitors are at higher resolution than 1024…
It's been about four minutes, and already three people have uploaded files. That's awesome, thanks.
(Of course, someone uploaded a screencap of the "Upload Your Screencap" page...)
And someone just uploaded a cap of their RSS aggregator. SharpReader, it looks like.
And there's our first Bloglines screencap....
Thirty two and counting. You guys are awesome. Keep 'em coming.
There you go, I'll be very interested to hear the results.
Hey,
I actually only read you in Thunderbird, but I thought to myself, why not give an old SoDak boy a hand?

Well, I just uploaded mine. I hope I'm the first with conky running.
I don't quite understand what you want to achieve? Are you looking for font-sizes or what?

I want to know, definitively, how much space people have to the right side of the screen.
I have 65 screencaps now, and they've tapered off. Thanks to everyone who provided one, and I'm going to shut the upload page down and wrap this experiment up.
Results will be forthcoming.
