Here’s the problem with taxonomies and content categorization schemes: no one will maintain them. You can set up the greatest content tree or grouping structure in the world, but sooner or later, content authors (yourself included) are going to get complacent.
That’s because the value-add is on the reader’s end of the equation, not the author’s, so there’s not a compelling reason for an author to go to the trouble. What do you do about this?
This, then, is an exercise in thinking out loud.
Why Everything You Think You Know About Blog Architecture is Wrong: This is a great article, which is so true. Blogs are outgrowing themselves, I think. We're now a few years into the blog "revolution," and blogs -- this one included -- are aggregating so much content that…
I was reading an article by Jon Udell about the legacy the tagging craze is going to leave behind. He says When the novelty wears off [...] I think that tagging will have altered the information landscape in a fundamental way. [...] it's the social…
The idea of "tagging" content is suddenly everywhere. With Flickr and del.icio.us and Technorati embracing the concept of tags, suddenly it's getting some broad acceptance. But what are "tags"? At the most basic level, they're just keywords — categorization without a master table of categories. Categorization that people…
I worked on improving the search on this site today. Search has been through a number of iterations. First, I used the basic Movable Type search. But it was slow and I wanted to do some interesting things with search. So last year, I switched to using a SQL…
A lot of people want to roll their own search with Movable Type. Us, for instance — Gadgetopia has a two-tiered search system based on whether the search term appears in the title, keywords, or body of the entry (see this post for more information). Our search is done in…
A New Website for Harper's Magazine: I've never heard of Harpers, but apparently it's a magazine published continuously since 1850, which makes for a lot of content. This article is from the guy who re-did their Web site. He explains how he organized all that stuff. Harper's is divided into two…
As you get more and more entries in a blog, how to you ensure people can find what they're looking for? Blogs are very front page-centric — unless you're watching the front page everyday, browsing the site is terribly inefficient. The category pages are all but worthless on Gadgetopia because…
Brother, Can You Spare a Metadata?: "A powerful way to generate metadata is by donation as the title of this post suggests. By donation, I mean consumer of information (i.e. user viewing a webpage) voluntarily contributes metadata about all or parts of the information on the page. As donated…
We unleashed our new search page over the weekend. To make it work correctly, we had to retroactively keyword all past entries (a endeavor about which I will write more later). but with that done, it seems to be working quite well. The engine returns terms in two groups —…
Great article. I couldn't agree more with the bit about people not bothering to maintain metadata. This is why I'm a bit cool on the whole idea of a Semantic Web :-)
Slightly OT, what were you doing at Inktomi/Verity (I used to work building search engines)?
I didn't work FOR Inktomi, I used Inktomi at my last employer. Great product. What search engines were you involved with?
Ah. My misteak :-)
For various reasons, I don't want to mention the name of my old employer. But it was a neural net- based search engine aimed at corporate intranets. Some pretty cool technology except that we were prevented from producing a truly kick-ass engine by corporate politics :-(
That's one of the great things about starting your own company - you get to do things your own way! All the ideas and improvements that we wanted to put into this search engine but weren't allowed to will be going into Awasu instead :-)
I got the new system running in beta last night, but two problems: (1) we really need to wait until we have a boolean-capable version on MySQL, and (2) we need to get all the past entries "keyworded" before it would show any real value.
Adam Kalsey ( http://www.kalsey.com ) sent me some related articles:
