My wife found a game at a yard sale and bought it. I checked the disk and tried to load the game. It shattered in the drive into a “million” bits. First time it has happened to be but I will not forget it. I was sitting next to the tower when it went.

Just minutes ago my second CD disk exploded inside an ASUS cd drive. This happened to me before with a SONY drive.

The first explosion happened while running a tiberian sun CD, the last one a few minutes ago was using ISO recorder to write an iso image. The last CD disk was a rewritable Memorex regular CD. ISO recorder erased the rewritable and then WHAM! a loud bang.

Needless to say I'm baffled on what can be the cause of both failures, cracked CDs? Once these explosions happened both CD drives were left useless with hundreds of little sharp pieces of a CD disk inside. I didn't bother to see if the drives were still usable.

My husband and I had this happened with two different CDs in two different computers within a week of each event. Had never had this happen before. We were able to get all of it out of my husband’s computer and he is able to at least play music again. My computer drive was ruined and will need professional help.

Hey guyz…! Please help me.. my pc was used by my frndz when i was away.. when i returned i found that my dvd writer was struk.. it wont eject.. the i opened it and cleaned it.. i found a broken cd like particals in it… after cleaning it ejects and closes but it read any cd/dvd and the disc wont spin either… ma frndz said the dont no anything abt this… what do i do? But the pieces were much thinner than a cd or dvd disc

just happened to me on my external hp dvd1270 52x burner. millions of tiny snowflakes. what I do not understand at all is 1. It is only 5 months old. 2. It was brand new cd (blank) and biggest brain fart is I put it in to burn photos on and walked to couch never even started the burning process. within 5 seconds of putting disc in no spinning sound just BAM! Whats up with that? How could it explode when was not even spinning????

I was installing windows (just a copy) when i heard a loud bang, i thought that something fell, at my computer the files won’t copy, so i skip, the second file after the bang won’t copy, so i opened the disc drive and saw shards of the disc, three big ones were inside that i manage to pulled out with cotton wad, good thing i wasn’t near the computer

Wow. I had no idea this many people had had the same expierence! I was putting some music on my media player, around three in the morning one night when I dug up an old cd I hadn’t heard in awhile. I put it in the drive waited for it to load when BANG! It sound like a car backfiring. The cd drive door was open and a large shard of cd was lying on the floor halfway across the room. I was able to shake most of the cd piece out of the drive but it my computer hasn’t worked right since.

Same thing happened to me on Dec 23, 2007. 52X LG drive and LabelWasher software disk. Thought a gun when off inside the computer. I was literally 2 feet from drive when the CD exploded. Luckily everything was contained within the drive. I pulled the drive out and opened it up, cleaned out all the fragments and reassembled the drive. It’s working fine again but I’m shopping around for a slower speed drive to replace it now. So much for progress.

I was loding my Game cd into my computer, and 10 mins later i heard a sound I can only relate to as a spedded up video of a F1 car accelerating. Them BOOM. The CD blew off the front bezel of the cd drive, and shards of sharp plastice went EVERYWHERE. One actually went out the door of my room! I was lucky to not have gotten cut or something like that.

I was playing my game when i heard a huge bang it scared the shit out of me the disk broke in many peices and now i can’t get them out of my computer. I did not no what the hell went on so i checked to see why this happened. This is when i found this site and i just wanted to share the information about the exploding disk.

My cd exploded jamming the drive! after finally getting it open it would not close again, and in the end I had to pay ?33 for a new cd drive!

It just happened at the office. A Visual Studio 6 CD just exploded inside a desktop of one of the guys, the CD ROM is working or so it seems, but the desktop went to Valhala with a blue screen of death and it hasn't come back =S

It's funny, a few years ago happened on a friend's computer it was a HP Pavillion, on that ocassion HP's warranty covered all the hardware, the CD was a blank one so there was no data to miss.

LG GSA-H10L with old Age of Kings game cd. I heard a noise, I thought someone had just fired at me; the installation of the game failed and when I ejected the cd, well, pieces of it fell off the tray. Bizarre.

i had a disc explode on me about 30 minutes ago i was installing a game and BOOM the disc was shattered into a hundred pieces. ive had that disc for a long time so it could had a few small cracks but damn im pissed and my drive is destroyed too it shatered the lens or something cause it wont work anymore im very angry this comp is brand new and band things keep happening first a vrius then the case fan died now the cd rom drive explodes wtf? my old comp never did shit like this it was way more reliable it was just slow as hell

I had a CD exploded yesterday at work. We heard a loud noise, and we started to look everywere and didn’t find anything. After a while I decided to change the CD I had in my CD-ROM drive and there was my CD in 50 pieces.

My Red Alert 2 cd exploded today ruining the drive... It seems those RA2 cds are pretty nasty as they are exploding en masse :| (found 3 comments here about RA2 cds exploding)

Well, after going karting on my 18th birthday, my mate and me went back to mine. I whooped my mates back side on a LAN game of CS:Source and my other mate spied Red Alert 2 to which I suggested he has a play. Put the CD into the drive and loaded it up. For some reason the buildings kept self destructing so we went and watched tv. After they had went home, about 3 hours later I heard an almighty whiring noise and thought it was just the fan buggering up. As soon as I got up and went to the computer the sound stopped but I realised it wasnt the fan, it was the CD drive so I pushed the button to open it. No chance! I removed the side panel of the computer and extracted as much dust as I could so I could see if anything was broken inside, and if I could push the drive open from behind. Still no luck. My other method was to prize it open with a screwdriver. This one worked and I was greeted with a quarter of a CD worth of shards. DOH! I got as much as possible out but didnt want to mess about with it incase the shards had damaged the drive in anyway. Thank fully the computer is under extended warrenty with Dell so the engineer is coming out within 24hrs to replace the drive. Good job Red Alert 2 comes with 2 cds!

Recently, while standing next to my computer, a shot rang out. I swear, for a moment I thought someone had just shot a gun, but as my senses analyzed quickly further, I realized it had come from the computer. At first I thought it must have been a computer component(the side panel is never on the computer), but I then noticed something floating to the ground in front of the computer, and my Lite-On 411s drive bay door was partially adjar, with Windows XP Pro disc fragments sticking out. It did have a small crack along the inner margin of the disc. One of the few ribbon cables that does not require soldering was sliced, so I am trying to find a replacement.

To those whose drives wont close, assuming you have made your best effort to extract all plastic, I had a problem with closure. Tray would slice in and out about 2-3 cm from a position close to being closed, but would also not quite close. Had something to do with something jumping over something(clear huh) when the tray was jarred open. What worked for me was forcing it closed(about 2-3 mm), and then pushing the paper clip release button in, while then opening tray(or some variation of that). The tray now slides in and out fine.

I thought it was one of the wonders of the world at first, like the time I squeezed a lime into a beer, and the whole thing then froze solid from the bottom up before my eyes, but I guess its not that uncommon.

Just yesterday while I played starcraft the game became quite glitchy. Then, BANG half of my cd (very sharp) shot out of the drive and almost clipped me in the face. Very very scary.

It happened to me today. I played Red Alert 2 For an hour when I finnaly got off my dad was about to play armored fist 3 when we heard a loud gunshot noise made by the computer. at first we thout the computer went corrupt. then we thought since i played my computer game for an hour the drive was very hot. when my dad put his game (which was kinda cold) logicly we thought that putting something cold into something hot (or vise versea) it will cause it to crack or explode. try it, put a glass in the freezer for a while an pour hot water in it

i just got a new gaming system with a full meal deal combo drive was loading an older game of mine baldurs gate soa and had disk 2 in the drive these disk were in great shape no scratches or cracks was watching it load it slowed down for a min then it started speeding up to high speed then all i heard was a load pop like a 22 short being fired the tray kicked open about 3/4 inch all i found were four medium sized chunks of cd and the rest was dust bad thing is the company i got my stuff from doesnt want to warrenty the cd drive
it also shorted out my cd player and power suply dont know about my mother board as of yet wish me luck as i have about 6k tied up in this gaming system

I just had an HP printer driver CD explode after only being in the drive for a short time. It sounded like a light bulb breaking. I assume it was caused by a defect in the CD, because I’ve had the drive for about a year without any problem.

I have never hear of a C D exploding. One just did a few minutes ago.I was trying to burn my daughter in favorite Christmas C D. OOPs have to buy another one. The copier wouldn’t reconize it. Than the C D started going real fast than I heard a big pop. I open the C D and what was left of the C D was in a million pieces. My husband come in said that’s what made that noise!!! I was just sitting there in shock? LOL Now I am afraid to try another CD. I don’t know was something wrong with the C D? I know the speed must of caused it. Will it happen if i try another one?

Yea, this post follows 5 minutes after this happened to me.

I tried running a Warcraft 3 CD to install, then I just heard the CD drive going really fast and a muffled pop. How can I tell if this is going to happen or not?
